If the weather is nice, having access to the Wilderness at the Smokies Lake Wilderness Outdoor Waterpark can add a lot of fun to your visit. This Waterpark is located at the River Lodge area of the Resort. As long as you are a guest at the Wilderness Lodge, you have access to all of the Water Parks available. If you have only visited during the cold months, you are probably already familiar with the Wilderness at the Smokies Wild Waterdome Indoor Waterpark but think of how much more fun it would be to have access to everything this resort has to offer.
Large Outdoor Spaces
The area that encloses the Lake Wilderness Outdoor Water Park takes up a little more than 100,000 square fee of space. In order to make enough room to hold all of the Water Features, this has to be a really big area. This section is almost completely enclosed on all sides by the River Lodge Buildings on each side and the Indoor Water Park at the end. This makes it a very busy location because it is so easy to move from Indoor to Outdoor fun without having to go very far.
Outdoor Water Fun for All
The Outdoor Water Park at Wilderness at the Smokies is a great way to get outside and enjoy the nature all around you. Whether you are out to have and exciting day by tackling all of the thrill rides available or you are just interested in reading a book while having a day of leisure, everything you want can be found at the Lake Wilderness Outdoor Waterpark. The design of this park is unique because the Lazy River can actually carry you to any of the other locations in the park having multiple entry and exit points. It is used by many guests as a flowing taxi system to get them to the next water feature. Both ends have a final destination of the large wave pool at the other end of the park. There is plenty of seating around the Wave pool but also along many of the Lazy River locations. If you are really interested in getting pampered, look into renting one of the large Cabanas for the day.
Young Kids and Toddlers
You will not find a large Kiddie Splash park at the Lake Wilderness Outdoor Water Park but there are a couple of things that the small ones can enjoy, like the shallow end of the Wave Pool or the Lazy River. That is okay because just a few steps away, you can take them to enjoy the very large water play area designed just for them at the Wild Waterdome Indoor Waterpark or take a walk across the street to the large outdoor Kids Splash park, Lurker’s Landing if you want to stay outside.

Cyclone Racers
Take your choice of lane by one of the bright colors, red, yellow green or orange and get ready to race down a 50 foot side by side drop. You may think you will be the fastest to the bottom but you may be surprised by who is in the lead by the time you splash down at the end. You may think that you have an advantage on one lane or the other but the way that this ride is engineered, it is supposed to be the same for all lanes. I guess you will just have to try them all to see for yourself.
- 4 Guests start at the top of a 50 Foot Tower
- Lights are used to start the race
- Side down the Enclosed Twisting Tubes on Racing Mats
- Exit the Enclosed section near the end to see who is in the lead
- Height Requirement: 48″ Minimum
- Weight Requirement: 100 lbs Minimum
Wild Vortex
Are you prepared for the real thrill in this Waterpark. Enter the Wild Vortex where you will be position on top of a trap door 66 feet up. At any moment the worker running the ride is going to push that little green button and as you start heading down, losing your stomach on the way I might add, you start to head into something that you don’t normally experience on a Water Ride, a loop. That is right, you have to have enough speed going through this ride to make it through a near vertical loop. Many guests will watch anxiously to see if their friend or family member comes out on the other end. I say this because it is possible that you will not have enough speed to make it all the way around the first time. Don’t worry though, it happens sometimes and if this happens to you, there is a trap door in the ride where you will be released so you can head to the top and try it all over again. Sounds fun and terrifying doesn’t it.
- 1 Guest at a time in Feet First Position only
- 39 foot vertical drop in a Completely enclosed Tube
- Nearly vertical loop
